Asian Brown Flycatcher
Migratory Birds (Species-2)
The second migratory species of my list is the big-eyed Asian Brown Flycatcher. You just can’t miss those spectacular eyes, in fact that’s why I first spotted this bird.

When its arrival in the city was first reported in the Facebook page ‘Biodiversity of Rabindra Sarobar‘, almost every bird enthusiast of the city was there in the RS Lake to catch a glimpse of it! I was a week late, but fortunate enough to spot the bird on that very day. The Lions’ Safari Park ,inside the lake is considered as the habitat of several resident and migratory birds of our city. Due to the lockdown, it was about to close at 8:30 a.m. and I was making my last round inside the park. Suddenly, when I was about 50 feet away from the gate, I saw something very tiny flew in and got lost inside the dense Banyan tree leaves! I stood still and then a slight displacement from that position gave me the view of those spectacularly big eyes of this small (~5 inch) bird. Got some good shots, one is presented above.
General Behavior
- Totally insectivorous.
- Patiently wait for insects and thus give birdwatchers and photographers ample time to capture them ! Good for us 🙂
- Love bushy areas or trees with dense leaves.
Places where I have found them
I have not found them anywhere else other than Rabindra Sarobar lake.
Bengali Name
Not known or probably there is none because of their migratory nature!
